Why? What exactly do you think we need to understand? There was no
possibility (at least not visible enough) to partition the new disk
during the installation procedure. We guessed the reason and managed to
partition it on another system manually (gparted).

Actually, there is a possibility to partition the disk during installation of SL7.1 although it is not that visible. During installation, there is a screen with a number of large icons. Click on the target disk icon and you will get a screen that allows you to select the target disk. Under Other storage options, you can choose to use automatic partitioning (my choice) or "I will configure partitioning". You can also choose "I would like to make additional space available". Click Done in the upper left corner and a splash screen will appear allowing you to reclaim disk space.

As a conclusion, I understand there is no requirement to have a
pre-partitioned disk for installation (as expected and reasonable).
Thanks. Can anybody reproduce the problem? We did it three times on
different systems. And yes, if time allows I will try to reproduce it on
a VM installation, but I am afraid VM disks (on VirtualBox) are or "look
to the installer like" pre-partitioned disks anyway.

Cheers
