This is an issue with backing store, as suggested by previous responses. The solution is:
1) Thanks to Devin Bougie! In the Screen section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf, include the line: Option "BackingStore". 2) DO NOT set backing store to Always for individual windows. Marian Szebenyi
