Dear Art, I do not know about your experience with Lyx and TeX, so please forgive me for pointing out in very basic form. Just to be sure: Was it a .tex-file you tried to "compile" with Lyx or did you try to open a .dvi-file and convert it to a .pdf-file?
I do not know too much about Lyx, but from my knowledge with Kile and TeXniCenter I think they are not the best tools to open dvi-files. If you really have a .dvi-file which you want to export to a .pdf, try on your terminal/console with "dvipdf inputfilename.dvi outputfilename.pdf" (without the quotation marks, of course).
