Remember a couple of weeks ago I expressed concern about the quality of fare
America's film industry is sending to the world? Explain this to me:
"Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" grossed an estimated $1.4 million from 815
screens, taking its cume to $19.5 million. Openings included No. 1 rankings in
Singapore, the Philippines and South Africa.
I'm trying to see how watching this dreck could help heal the polticial,
social, and religious problems in these countries. Will watching Rob Schneider
and Eddie Griffin act like fools solve the problems with increasingly
aggressive Islamist extremists in the Phillipines? I'm sure the poor residents
of the townships in South Africa will just forget their problems after being
treated to a screening of the film! Or maybe, after seeing a black fool and a
white fool together on screen, the holdover bigots from Apartheid will abandon
their former ways?
On a positive note, "...the Wallace & Gromit franchise took in an estimated
$26.4 million internationally (including non-UIP territories), giving it a
cumulative total of more than $40 million."
Hurrah for old-fashioned quality animation!
