This supports my theory that voting is almost always an emotional
response for the vast majority of voters. People will say one thing
and do another based on subconscious emotional response. 

The right wing/conservative candidates have long understood this.
That's why they play the fear card(terrorism, communism, crime etc)
so often. It works. The Left wing/Liberal candidates are constantly
trying to play to intellectual motivations and they fail
consistently.
