Why is one a "real" interpretation and the other a "misiniterpretation?"  
Because the
  dominant group wants to control the discourse even if it means silencing or 
marginalizing other voices.

CM: Good question.

I'm always amazed how some authors/artists feel free about using other 
cultures in their stories (in horrible ways, no less.) Yet get all 
antsy when someone in that usurped culture challenges them on it.
