I also tried to install scikit-image another way. And got errors:

> pip install scikit-image --user

    Complete output from command /usr/local/python/2.7.9/gnu/bin/python -u -c

You are using pip version 8.1.0, however version 9.0.1 is available.
You should consider upgrading via the 'pip install --upgrade pip' command.

So, it complains about cython. But cython is already installed:

> pip install cython --user
Requirement already satisfied (use --upgrade to upgrade): cython in
/p/home/usr/local/python/2.7.9/gnu/lib/python2.7/site-packages/Cython-0.23.4-py2.7-linux-x86_64.egg

I'm not sure what to do next.
