so the matlab bit actually goes out through a piece of software we use for
neuroimaging analysis called nipype. it's a fairly lightweight install if
you wanted to use it just for the matlabcommand. it's not a replacement for
matlab, just a python interface to call scripts. you won't get return
variables. the code should be fairly self-explanatory, but do ask questions
if you run into any issues.
