Just curious what this is, and whether it might not be known under other names in other fields, I found this http://sist.sysu.edu.cn/~syu/HSMM_bibliography.htm "The HSMM is also called “explicit duration HMM”, “variable-duration HMM”, “HMM with explicit duration”, “hidden semi-Markov model”, generalized HMM, segmental HMM and segment model in the literature, depending on their assumptions and their application areas."
