Just to make it clear, I don't plan to "take ownership" of this module
and nobody should. The code should be co-owned and maintained by
everybody interested in the project (and at least 2 or 3 people being
familiar with this part of the project would be great). But the
current seemingly fragile test suite with XXX marked areas and tests
that fail when the PRNG seed is changed is not helping.

I just refactored the test suite structure in my pull request because
this was preventing the maintenance of the rest of the project (Python
3 support).
