I haven't had a look at the code, so I don't know if this is practical, 
but I would prefer it if we could get away with as little deprecation as 
possible,
while getting the improve implementation into the code base. I would 
imagine the interface would be the same as the current one, but the
attributes would change. Would it be possible to provide 
backward-compatible attributes to we don't have to deprecate the whole 
estimator?
