why not use the normal style information scintilla provides. you can trust what its unchanged and if the unchanged is lexed as var you can trust them and continue from but yes there is no information about how many and what types of braces still to close.

i talked at the german perl workshop a little with nicholas clark and we talked about the perl parser too, hee heavyly looks back and forward so you have too. but even when an extra data stucture is bad, you get much more speed with it and avoid duplication. indeed i believe it will be scintilla untypically slow if you look too much forward and below. maybe i could help you with the lexer and maybe yould help me to start with mine but currently im slightly before an next stable release so a lot to do. but we will see.
