Initial Comment:
Do you think it is possible to implement some kind of AI 
that will do its best to guess the width of tabs (basing on 
file contents and not the filename) ?
It should make a decision by checking whether the 
contents is "more aligned" with one tab width than the 
others. This is no 100% guess, but should work in 
practice.
This is a kind of problem interesting from the academic 
point of view. Maybe some researches have done some 
work in this area?
