The aim is to preserve indentation when word wrapping is on: a wrapped word should appear below the first actual word of the previous line (instead of column 1). The editor component of KDE has got this feature. I find it *VERY* useful when I typeset in LaTeX with kile, since it allows me to compose very long lines, preserving (visually) the indentation, without inserting forced CRs.
