I'm not using a lexer, i used SCI_SETLEXER(SCLEX_NULL). Previously i had SCI_SETLEXER(SCLEX_CONTAINER) > but i didn't need the SCN_STYLENEEDED notifications so i changed to SCLEX_NULL.
that's actually your problem: Scintilla expects a lexer to restore correct styles after the last updated position each time such an update happens. and if there is no lexer, then it expects to have empty styles. if you do styling 'by hand', from outside Scintilla, you'll always get dirty things if your editor is not pure read-only.
