Summary: Useless default settings

Initial Comment:
The idea behing the default (out-of-the-box) settings of an application is that it will nearly fit most user's needs. It would be good idea to apply this to SciTe too, after all it is just the matter of fixing the SciTEGlobal.properties.

By default a proportional font is used for almost everything (like Java, C and C++, HTML, etc). Monospaced font should be used, since this is source code editor.

By default you can't see the line number anywhere. Either turn on that line number ruler on the left side, or turn on that line number displayer something at the bottom.

By default maximize the window (at least it's height), instread of useing sizes given in pixels.

Etc.

The Etc. is a bit fuzzy...

Did you made a survey on the needs of "most users" or do you expect your needs/tastes to be those of the majority of programmers? I agree with Neil, the line numbers are useless in 99% cases, we have a Goto dialog to jump to a line with an error, and the line number is displayed in the status bar. I like proportional fonts for scripting languages and fixed for C/Java/etc. Anyway, unless relying on uninteresting default fonts for a given system, the choice of font has to be adjusted for most users to fit those installed, their taste, etc. In most cases I like to maximize my applications, with some exceptions: for hex editors, I fit the width to the display, for source editors, I fit it more or less to display 80 columns. This is a good visual guide. Of course, the heigth is adjusted to be as tall as possible, but this depends on the resolution I have.

Unlike what you think, defaults are here to make a reasonably correct result on first start, but are here to be tweaked to the tastes, needs, environment of each user, so are quickly overriden anyway.
