I've made small patches and am including the source file with this bug report. CreatePipe() is still a bit wonky, but I don't have the energy to open up the discussion about large-scale changes. The couple of small changes I've submitted are enough to get things working for me. BTW-- I've almost got my GTK project manager done, and will put it up on SourceForge when it's ready to go.
