Greg Smith:
In Scintilla, the mouse pointer stays as a caret when you are over the SetMarginLeft() area.
The margin left area is to make it easier to select the caret position to the left of the first character which may otherwise have only half a character width range to click in. Hard if its "i" or "1". Also provides a small visual gap.
Even though I have increased this are to 8 pixels wide, I find that I almost always end up clicking in the folding margin,
Scintilla has three general purpose margins that can be used for your desired purpose. I'll increase this to 5 for the next release.
causing very annoying code folding instead of selecting the line... of course, Scintilla does not take a click in this area as selecting a line either (or perhaps I have disabled it somehow if it does)!
It is your application code that is interpreting the fold margin click and it is allowed to ignore the click if it is not on a fold icon. Or select a line.
