Is Scintilla doing such replacement (automatically replaces tabs with spaces) with some different settings? I'm little confused, because I was sure, that the behaviour of Scintilla was just like I had described.
If you have indenation set to use spaces and you perform an indent command such as backspace or tab inside the indentation then you will see a conversion.
