Yes, very large files are slow at many operations. Its unlikely that much work will be done on improving this. You should consider a stream editor like 'sed' if you commonly want to perform many replacements in large files.
PS: I don't understand well what a "resynchronization point" is...
Armel's using it to discuss a way to get the benefits of syntax colouring large files without doing the work of colouring all of the files by just colouring the area shown plus looking back a bit.
