The existing XML lexer is not a good match for rich styling of XML documents and due to Scintilla limitations can not be easily extended to cover all the possibly desired features. A new lexer could be implemented (with quite a bit copied from the current lexer) but there would still be some limitations such as on the number of namespaces that get individually highlighted. I won't be worlking on this myself but its the sort of thing that a group of interested people could collaborate on: there are a vast number of potential features.
