1) To make a smaller editor (like Notepad2, usually by recompiling Scintilla with less lexers); 2) To add functionalities which you are missing in SciTE (but you can add them to SciTE as well, as long as you don't try to transform it to an IDE); 3) To have something easier to configure, using more familiar dialogs instead of cryptic (but powerful!) configuration files;
