One thing I thought of, if the property is enabled and no path is present (e.g. after closing all open buffers), maybe it should default to SciteDefaultHome or UserHome or something other than a bad path.
That was just a deduction on my part - I still can't reproduce the problem. It always seems to use the current directory so just gives me a warning message. Possibly its the version of GTK+ or its defaulting to a non-existent directory in your setup.
