I don't know if my reply was received by the list. If I uncompress sc172.exe with upx.exe, it produces a 1mb executable that works. I then re-compressed sc172.exe with upx and it worked.

I'd have a chat with your QA people, Neil. :) I pretty much always build from CVS, and so don't really often check your downloadable executables before a release... of course, the UPX one is not exposed until after a release anyway, IIRC.
