That is called "indent.auto" in SciTE. There is a bigger chance of guessing the indentation parameters incorrectly so it is unlikely I'll distribute with indent.auto as the default. For deciding the default configuration, some of my criteria are what is the safest and likely to produce the fewest support requests.
