Using an external hex viewer isn't so bad...
I will add to Philippe's answer by mentioning the hex editor that I
use (which IIRC I heard about here): it is called "HxD" from
http://www.mh-nexus.de/
It is incredibly fast, and in addition to "normal" hex viewing and
editing of files, allows you to examine memory and raw disk too!
