But that's just it: We (I am in this category too) don't want the brace background to always be the same as the editor background. We want the brace background to be transparent. If the brace being highlighted is on the current line (of course at least one of them must be), then we would like for that brace's background to be the same as defined in caret.line.back. But when one of the braces is not on the current line, then the one which is not on the current line should have the same background as the editor, while the one on the current line should have the same background as the current line.

I would think that the behavior for all styles should be to inherit the prevailing background color if no background color is explicitly specified for that style. (Perhaps there are exceptions to this, but I can't think of any at the moment.)
