Well, Javacards may be nice and all, but for instance here in Finland we
will not be seeing any significant Javacard activity in the near future
(perhaps the DVB-T will do something to help with that, but I don't know the
exact card type used in the MHP STBs) because the government and the few
commercial CA's operating here do not use them. We are quite committed to
Setec-style PKCS#15 -profiled cards with integrated crypto-processors and
16kb of memory and SWIMs/USIMs in the mobile side.

I'd be very happy if something as universal as possible will emerge some day
out of muscle that will support both java- and cpu/storage cards in a
unified architecture with a standard API like PC/SC to use. This way the
card operations will be abstracted out of the application developers faces
and propably result in more support for smart cards in general. As it stands
currently there are virtually no proper references on how to work with SC's
(except the muscle docs & source) and the card manufacturers are quite
thight lipped about their OS's & command sets. SDK's cost a fortune or are
entirely unavailable to private persons.

My €0.02, Raymond
