The PC/SC interface needs a working CT-API. Programming only with the
CT-API is very difficult. PC/SC is the defacto Smartcard-programming
API.

You can't mount any smartcard devices. You need a special software for
every card. For example: you can't change data on a Schlumberger
Cyberflex-Card with an application for the GPK-8000 Card. The
APDU's are different in most cases. But standards exists for
many of the APDU's (ISO-7814-4 for exapmle).
