Because this concerns a possible state-wide project, I'm cross posting
this to several mailing lists, just as a head's-up.

However, due to the subscriber-only nature of most of our lists, be aware
that group replies will probably require lots of administrative intervention
across the lists to discard or approve posts from those people who haven't
take the time to subscribe to all the included lists. (That alone might be
reason enough to start using a statewide list as discussed below.) So, take
some care with your replies.

I suggest perhaps discussing this within your local group: If, and if
so, how you might want to participate as a group, and perhaps identify one
or more volunteers to be a liason for this project (hopefully someone who
will or already does subscribe to the other groups' lists, or who will be an
"early-adopter" subscriber to any statewide list[s].)

I created http://iowalug.org this fall and it just has a map of the state right now.

I only get the map when I go to www.iowalug.org, but not when I go to iowalug.org. This is with konqueror 3.1.2, Debian installed via knoppix-installer, FWIW.

I like the way you've handled FLUiD and LUNIX with place holders. But at
who point do you think they should probably come off the map, without
further interest from people in those areas? On the other hand, such an
approach could really help a nascent users group, just trying to get on its
feet, to organize and hit critical mass.

Also, if you get a chance, could you change AAFUGIT to AmesFUG on the map
and in the given link (www.amesfug.org)? See

http://www.amesfug.org/pipermail/amesfug/2003-December/014959.html

for the notice of the name change.

Maybe we could setup list.iowalug.org for a state wide listserver ?

For some value of "we," yes we could ;-)

crlug.org has not list server right now and we are working on that.

If it were me, getting the local group a functioning mailing list would be a higher priority, unless you see the iowalug effort helping along crlug in some way, as mentioned above.

I subscribe to both iclug and crlug and we do get lots of double posts
to each list.

From what I've seen, those cross-posts tend to be technical in nature, and only go to lists that the poster participates in, anyway. Do you see the goal of an iowa-wide list as reducing those kinds of cross-posts?

What other goals do you see for such a list?

If you do a google search for "meta-lug" (the dash is very important),
you'll hit this post from CIALUG's Dave Champion,

http://www.amesfug.org/pipermail/amesfug/2000-August/008229.html

discussing some possible uses of a state-wide list, which seem pretty
reasonable to me.

A while back, I set up a Debian Users of Iowa list

http://dui.debian.net/mailman/listinfo/dui

with the notion that one day it would be used in the way we're discussing. I
wrote the corresponding main web page at http://dui.debian.net/dui to try to
include more than just Debian, more than just Linux, too, even

<#include std-BSD-GNU-Linux-FLOSS.flamewars>

Inertia, lack of time to write a proposed list charter, among other
things, has kept me from pushing it at all, though, to fill this role.

But, it's available, so we could use that list, or something else. It's
probably high time to do *something* though along these lines.

I did not see crlug.org on this site:
http://dui.debian.net/dui/OtherLocalUsersGroups
could you add it?

As I mentioned in earlier mail, it's a wiki site, so just go ahead and fix anything you want to see fixed there--if someone gets carried away with inappropriate "fixes" we'll fix those, too. :-)

(dc, I fixed the defacement to your page there, by the way).

In any case, I did add crlug to the list, thanks.

Great idea... count me in.

The Meta-LUG never really took off. There was once a domain registered for it, but that's long since expired. This all happened about the time we were also kicking around the idea of an Iowa / Midwest Linux User Conference.

My suggestion would be to create a mailing list for inter-lug communication, and a simple wiki or phpnuke type web site for information.

I'm sure there's no shortage of people who can host this... but I'll offer CIALUG's web server as an option.
