It is better than gentoo's due to the fact that is runs with threads
that are 500% faster than old pthread Also it is compiled against
CVS-glibc which has new standards and in my opinion is a bit more
robust. I can't really compare it to any BSD ports because I stopped
my bsd travels long ago.

Updateing is simple. If its new and you need it, build it! As far
as the system goes it is based on LFS 5.0 (linuxfromscratch.org)
This is the 3rd sys I built. =)

Dependencies are handled a bit deferently. As life, every thing
depends, given each system is build for a specific glibc it would
be alot harder to link every pgm or lib to a specific
lib[whatever].so.[number]
So, I would imagin if a package needs another package just compile and
install the needed package. [kinda like rpm] And if a package needs
another version of a package you could do some nifty PATH ||
LD_LIBRARY_PATH || LD_PRELOAD hacking.
hope that clears up what you asked.
