I had that happen to me once. My problem was that I had both a bad XF86Config
file and a bad Xserver. You could try upgrading X to something new or try
digging thru the output of (w/o X running)

bash#> cd ~
bash#> XFree86 -configure
bash#> vi XF86Config.new

and dig out the keyboard and mouse sections
