Can anyone give a brief synopsis of setting up a home wireless network?

I can try. :-) Usually you have an access point plugged into the network, then you install wireless client adapters (PCI, USB or PCMCIA) on the machines you want to have access the network wireless-ly. They talk to the access point.

Perhaps with hardware suggestions?

I have used D-link stuff, it works ok, but I'm not too impressed with it. If I had to do it over again I'd go with Linksys. Walmart (and many other places) has a Linksys access point for under $50. I usually buy my client adapters for between $10-$30 after rebate at BestBuy.

What is it that stops other people from connecting to my home network? Is
there a method of DHCP authentication? Any comments would be appreciated,
thanks in advance.

You can enable encryption, which is not fool proof but would take a lot of effort to hack. Also you can enter in the MAC addresses of your clients in your access point and tell it to only talk to those clients.

Hope this helps.
