As Ted had announced in the last couple weeks, there was a planning meeting
scheduled for November 18th. We discussed where the group has been and
where it should be headed. Due to low attendance and participation, it was
decided to expand the focus of the group to cover more than just Linux
topics. We came up with a new name, the Siouxland Technology Users Group,
or Siouxland Tech for short. We have setup a new domain,
www.siouxlandtech.org. We will try to maintain a focus on Open Source
software and Internet technologies. We are not becoming a Microsoft club
or a Windows users group.
We also decided to change our meeting times, Saturday afternoon did not
work well for a lot of people. We will now be meeting the first Thursday
of every month at 6:30 PM. I hope this fits better with people's
schedules. Our meeting location will continue to be the Sioux City Schools
Board Building on Pierce St. Our next meeting will be Thursday January
5th. We will hear a presentation on Podcasting, what it is, how to use it,
and how to create your own Podcasts. This should be very interesting so
put it on your calendar and invite your friends.
To generate interest in the new group we plan to have spots running on two
local cable systems's public announcement channels. We will also have some
flyers and possibly a banner advertisement at the Siouxland Home Show in
February.
We are still gathering ideas for future meetings. If there's something
you'd like to hear about or give a presentation about, please email me or
post it to the list.
Also note that the mailing list will be switching from the deadpacket.com
domain to siouxlandtech.org. This transition should be pretty painless for
everyone. When the move is made we'll make an announcement on the
list. At that time there will be a new address to use for sending messages
to the list. Hopefully the old address will continue to work for sometime
also.
Take care,
-Ryan
