Those suggesting the tab was removed state that they try to keep the synopses to less than 72 chars so that CR+synopses is less than 80 chars, the tab was pushing it over. That and the (ahem) teamware putback command didn't indent by a tab (don't shoot the messenger). Your explanation makes sense though, except for the files which start in column 3 but I guess that makes it useful for scripts (grep "^ ") [though why anyone would do that!].
