What does this message mean?

> remote: abort: There is no Mercurial repository here (.hg not found)!
> abort: no suitable response from remote hg!

I set up some hg repositories on one machine and I had no problem doing 
hg operations there.  That machine is down at the moment, so I trying to 
update the repositories as well as build on a different machine (public 
build machine jansky) and I get the above message in response to any 
significant hg operation that I try.

What's up?
