You could, but I'm not convinced it would be better.

If you were to do things with convert you would create two onnv
workspaces, that are completed unrelated to eachother.

You'd have to forcibly pull one into the other, merge the heads (this
far it may work).

You'd then need to recommit out the entirety of your "other" onnv,
leaving only your changes.

I'm not convinced doing things that way is sound, assuming the script
you were suggesting works equally well.
