The difference between commit and recommit is that the commit
operation has no default message. The recommit operation does have a
default message, so the same user interface (don't edit the message)
won't work reliably.
I'm leaving this open in case we can think of some other user
interface that would work, like maybe editing out all the messages.
Workaround: restore from the backup that was made prior to the
recommit.
