Joerg Schaible closed XSTR-701 as Not A Bug The result is not the expected with fromXML() when multiple addImplicitCollection and empty elements in the first For deserialization at runtime there are only two lists left without any information what kind of elements belong to which list. You have to use the implicitCollection calls with more arguments to make it possible for XStream to separate the items.
