You can already do this with:

xstream.registerConverter(new ReflectionConverter(
    xstream.getMapper(), xstream.getReflectionProvider(), XStream.PRIORITY_VERY_LOW) {
    protected boolean shouldUnmarshalTransientFields() {
        return true;
    }
});
xstream.registerConverter(new SerializableConverter(
    xstream.getMapper(), xstream.getReflectionProvider(), XStream.PRIORITY_LOW) {
    protected boolean shouldUnmarshalTransientFields() {
        return true;
    }
});
