OK, confession time (yes, I'm using bloody outlook. Yes I'm at work. That's why
I can't quote properly...)
The reason I couldn't see my output was because I was doing:
foreach ( @ARGV) {
print( STDERR "\targ: " + $_ + "\n");
}
And so, of course, I was getting a sequence of zeros, one for each argument,
and couldn't understand what was going on. When I fixed that to
$argn = 0;
foreach ( @ARGV) {
print( STDERR "\targ ". $argn++. ": " . $_ . "\n");
}
things proceeded a little faster.
I've actually made some useful progress today which I shall post in a separate
post to the list, but as usual I thank you for your exceedingly prompt and
helpful replies.
Cheers
Simon

Why are you looking at %l ? You should be looking at %p.

stderr already goes to your terminal.
