From what I can tell, the previous Python 3 stuff was based on six, and
a vendored version of that – I am guessing so as to avoid dependency
problems.

I feel we should drop six and work with future. I will check the
licence to make sure we can vendor this, and if there is no impediment
will just get on with using futurize to create a Python 3 codebase that
runs on Python2.
