Can we start with some digits? Otherwise how do we know that the new
way is actually solving the problem.
Certainly won't be pushed without benchmarking, and likely would be an
opt-in, rather than default, for a while anyway.
I did get a quick implementation going, and the informal timing I did on
that were somewhat disappointing.
