I have asked this a couple of times before and the answers I have received
have confused me mightily. (It was rather like deciding to do work on my
Famous Beige Nissan, looking into Chilton's, and giving up in fear and
despair.) So any responses in easy to understand, non-tech language would be
appreciated so as not to damage my already fragile self-esteem.

I have LPs. I have a turntable and tape deck and amp. I have a computer
with a burnable CD drive in it. At the moment that computer does not have a
sound card in it, but that is not insurmountable given how cheap they are
these days.

What do I need in terms of other equipment and software, what do I have to
do, to record the LPs and tapes onto the burnable CD. List and explain as
if you were explaining the process to a person who had never seen a
turntable before, let alone a burnable CD drive.

I got bogged down in the previous explanations because I couldn't figure out
how the turntable sends the signals to the computer, and how you plug it in
because sound cards don't have RCA stereo jacks. And a turntable needs a
pre-amp thingee to amplify the sound from the needle and that is why amps
have a special jack just for turntables.

I don't care to invest in a burnable CD deck which plugs directly into the
amp, at least not until they come out with ones that are less expensive.

These are LPs and tapes which in all likelihood will never be released onto
CD. And if they were, I'd happily dump my burned copy for a commercially
remastered and recorded one.

Off list responses probably best, unless we have a whack of people on list
who want to burn onto CD their old Scottish and Cape Breton vinyl.

Is there a website or book anywhere -- Audio Piracy For Dummies, or
something like that?
