Things seem to have gone quiet here for a day or so.
The Music of Dalkeith event we did on Monday went off pretty well.
We did a few pieces originally written for the ballroom in Dalkeith
Palace, played in that room for the first time in 150-250 years.
I'd assumed from the start that if they worked back then with no PA
they still would, and I was right: even with a capacity audience,
I could fill the space with the sound of an unaccompanied flute.
And surprisingly, a Highland pipe didn't sound out of scale either.
That architect knew his stuff.
The ballroom in the Assembly Rooms has the same character, though
it's bigger - the Gows never needed more than 6-8 musicians and
that's about all there's room for in the band's niche in the wall.
Some performers at ALP's fiddle events there realize what they're
playing in, others seem to need the security blanket of 1000 watts
of amplification. Pity.
There have been many recordings in Roslin Chapel, though probably
more for symbolic than acoustic reasons (can't offhand remember
much about the acoustic there). Anyone know where William Marshall
played, except for his own living room?
