Too late. You're right about how we were taught, and it's not just a Scots
thing. I heard an interesting thing on the radio about this (BBC radio 3 or
4?) A classical musician discussing the world of 'modes' and how little of
the best-known/loved music there is that is 'major' or 'minor' the way we were
told.
There is an old quote somewhere of someone describing Irish music (I think) as
having 'in the happiest of music, a note of sadness, and in the saddest music,
a note of happiness'. Johnson may have said something similar about Scots
music- I have a hellish memory, and I'm recovering from a flu-like illness.
Not allowed to call it flu cos I had a jag a few weeks ago. That may be
off-topic, unless it's Caledonian flu.
