Forgot to point out that these old guys were crazy about Eddie Lang etc, who played with jazz fiddlers- Lang and Joe Venuti, Django and Grapelli. So playing with fiddlers was just the natural thing to do. They also switched to mandolin at times to do some melody stuff.
