More about the Calvert Collection.
I am on the digest not the main list, so I am slow to react to things that
are posted to the list.
I have changed the "f" s back to "s". I studied 18thC literaure over half
a life time ago. I knew all about the "long s"!.
So far I have offers from; Nigel Gatherer and Andre Kunz to transcribe
tunes into ABC and form Jack Campin to proofread the final result, which
is great. Please fell free to add yourself to the list.
Thanks to Jack I have become more aware of what abc is really about and
also the need to be true to the original as is possible. By the way,
Calvert seems to be very musically literate but there are only a few
examples of tunes with repeats shown. Given that reels and strathspeys in
the collection are almost invariable in the form we would recognise as
four bars :| eight bars ||
this is rather odd. Just a few tunes have the repeats actually shown!
Perhaps it eas assumed that the player would know this. Or perhaps the
engraver did not bother.
There are other anomalies. The first tune - God save the King, has some
numbers below the bass stave that look like figured bass. Perhaps this was
copied by the engraver from some other source to show the musician's
patriotism. I am poor at history, but suspect that even in 1799 there was
a threat from France.
Perhaps I am being over sensitive here. The first time I went to the
cinema, the same tune was played at the end of the film! However
There are several tunes which hint at the importance of organised military
response to a threat of war or invasion;
The Berwickshire Yeomanry's March - 1, 2nd and Bass
The Kelso Volunteers March - 1, 2nd and Bass
The Kelso Volunteers Quick Step
The Roxburgh Cavalry Yeomanrys March - 1, 2nd and Bass
The Scotch Militia
Newcatle Volunteers Quick Step
It is interesting that all the tunes with both "seconds" and composed bass
parts are those above.
I really am not sure what to do with these tunes. I do not have the
ability to render them in abc. My best bet would be to transcribe them in
a music manuscript package - and expert a MIDI file.
I would welcome any suggestions.
There are about 10 tunes in all which have seconds or bass lines which
look intersting. Perhaps I am being over influenced by David Johnson who
has suggested that the printed bass lines of 18th C Scottish fiddle music
are no better than would be extemporised by a competent cellist. Perhas
they are all worth notating.
I would welcome opinions - as well as an offer to try transcribing one of
the three part tunes into abc.
Anyway, I shall divide the task among the volunteers. I'll wait till
Sunday or Monday. If anyone wants to join in, please email me me directly
as well.
In the meantime, I think that the latest transcriptions I have done should
be more acceptable to long term abc users. Please put me right if they are
not;
