Oh dear - this will return many responses, none of which you might
expect. Scotland have on several occasions done brilliantly to get to
the World Cup (Soccer) Finals, but once there, we've never quite been
able to compete with the big boys. This has produced reactions from
Scots ranging from disgust to a national sport of deriding any notion
that Scotland could win ANYTHING. At its best this can be funny,
inventive and affectionate; at its worst, it can sound like the worst
whinging ever. Mostly it's somewhere in between.
I suspect the tunes you ask about were in celebration of Scotland
GETTING to the finals, much in the manner of Rod Stewart's efforts. I
don't think I've come across them, but if John Turner was involved, you
could try asking him. He runs a fiddle school called Jink and Diddle:
that's a place to start your search.
Dr Turner sent me one of his publications once, a jolly little
collection of miscellaneous Scottish tunes. It included a version of
the Stars and Stripes, published in Edinburgh in seventeen oatcake; I
think he was suggesting that it's a Scots song originally, and given
that anything worthwhile in this world has a Scottish connection, he's
probably right. Cue Jack Campin to give us the whole story (or a
scathing put-down of such preposterous claims).
If you find what you're looking for, let us know - good luck.
