'Ballop' is still common parlance on the streets of Edinburgh. Some years ago 
I was part of a band that toured Germany playing mostly Irish stuff, as it was 
v popular over there.
We did a set of Kerry slides, and took off the Chieftains by singing a verse 
to one of the tunes.  Peter McClements (fiddler of this parish) composed a 
Limerick specially for this, which started 'There was a young woman named 
Madge...'.  The 3rd line featured 'ballop'.
